This updated edition of Bruce Shelley's classic text Church History in Plain Language includes new developments within the church and its 20th Century missionary programs, discusses the impact of emerging technologies on the gospel, and explores the explosive growth of Christianity in the third world. But it also covers everything that came before--from Jesus to the martyrs, the martyrs to Augustine, and on down to the Reformation and, of course, the present day.

Incredibly reader-friendly, Shelley's book edifies, teaches and provides a clear window into the eventful history of the Christian church.

This book presents the historical development Christianity's most crucial doctrines. Each doctrine is presented in conjunction with Wayne Grudem's treatment of them in his classic work Systematic Theology. As such, the doctrines are presented topically and then each is discussed individually in accordance with how various historical figures have understood them. Thus, while historical in scope, Historical Theology remains systematic in its format, rather than tracing the doctrines in linear progression.

Defending Constantine weighs these claims and finds them wanting. And what's more, in focusing on these historical mirages, Leithart argues, we have failed to notice the true significance of Constantine and Rome brought under the canopy of Christianity. For beneath the surface of this contested story there emerges a deeper narrative of the end of Roman sacrifice and brutality--and a tectonic shift in the political theology of an empire--the implications of which we are still realizing, and ironically not fully appreciating. In this probing and informative book Peter Leithart examines the real Constantine, weighs the charges against Constantinianism and Constantine, and sets the terms for a new conversation about this pivotal emperor and the Christendom that emerged.

Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a German Reformed church historian, born in Switzerland. He was educated at Tubingen, Halle, and Berlin, and later took a position as Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, New York. Schaff bases his work on the premise that church history in order to be valid and valuable must deal with three factors: 1) God through Christ, 2) man as a responsible moral creature, and 3) Satan as a real being employing the Anti-Christ as his agent at the end of time.

Schaff begins his history with an examination of the preparation for Christianity in Judaism and the heathen world and the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The 8 volume series concludes with a general introduction to modern church history and a thorough analysis of the productive period of the Reformation, tracing the Protestant movement in Germany and Switzerland to the close of the 16th century. There are footnotes, charts, maps and each volume contains its own alphabetical index.

Schaff taught church history at German Reformed Seminary in Mercersburg, Penn., and Union Theological Seminary in New York. He was involved in the formation of the Evangelical Alliance, the revision of the English Bible (the Revised Version), and the Alliance of the Reformed Churches. Schaff was founder of the American Society of Church History.

Fea offers an even-handed primer on whether America was founded to be a Christian nation, as many evangelicals assert, or a secular state, as others contend. He approaches the title's question from a historical perspective, helping readers see past the emotional rhetoric of today to the recorded facts of our past. Readers on both sides of the issues will appreciate that this book occupies a middle ground, noting the good points and the less-nuanced arguments of both sides and leading us always back to the primary sources that our shared American history comprises.

There are few figures in the history of Western Spirituality who are more enigmatic than the fifth or sixth-century writer known as Pseudo-Dionysius. The real identity of the person who chose to write under the pseudonym of Dionysius the Areopagite is unknown. Despite the mystery surrounding Pseudo-Dionysius, the influence of this shadowy figure on broad range of mystical writers from the early middle ages on is readily discernible. Until now, relatively few attempts have been made to translate the entire corpus of his writing into English. Here in one volume are collected all of the Pseudo-Dionysius' works.
