What inspired you to write The Thorn?

The idyllic rural setting, in the heart of Lancaster County’s Amish farmland, took on a life of its own, nearly like a character in the cast of my story. I was also influenced to write The Thorn after rereading an old classic tale, as well as Obedience, by Andrew Murray.

What is your favorite holiday recipe?

Pumpkin Chiffon Pie, found on page 146 of The Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage Cookbook. (Honestly, would my readers ever forgive me for withholding the description of this recipe?)

Can you share a favorite memory from the holidays?

One very special Christmas Eve, years ago, I was sitting across the living room from our shimmering tree and felt tenderly drawn to pray for the biological mother of the baby we were waiting to adopt. Little did I know our precious first baby’s birth mother, scared and quite young, was experiencing her first pangs of childbirth that very night.

What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn?

Really, only one?? “What Child Is This?” and “Sleigh Bells.”

Does your family have any holiday traditions?

Sure. The annual Birthday Cake for Jesus is one family tradition that has endured through the years. The cake is accompanied by the lighting of many candles (but not 2,000+!) and the family’s singing the birthday song for the “birthday boy,” and then cutting the cake … and thanking God for sending His most wonderful gift in the form of a tiny baby boy.

Another tradition is our annual Gingerbread House-Making, followed by “unbiased” judges—usually my dad and my sister—who award homemade paper medals for each beautiful and unique gingerbread house. Everyone wins for creativity!

What is your favorite holiday movie?

A Christmas Carol, with George C. Scott as Scrooge.

Do you have a favorite holiday book?

The Little Match Girl, by Hans Christian Andersen.
