If you you often find that your efforts to satisfy everyone are draining you emotionally, you are probably in a pattern of unhealthy people pleasing. In When Pleasing You Is Killing Me, Dr. Les Carter helps readers find a balance between Christ-like servanthood and personal well-being.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Can tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
27 years as a Psychotherapist, formerly with Minirth Clinic for 25 years, and co-founded Southlake Psychiatric & Counseling Center
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: How did you become interested in writing?
Early in my career I wanted to express my insights. I was influenced by Frank Minirth and Paul Meier to write.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
I had written quite a bit about angry and controlling people and I realized that each of these people were surrounded by appeasers. This book addresses the need to be free from others toxic emotions.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
Once you become habituated to people pleasing, you develop a relational style of Dishonesty. What may appear as servitude is not that at all. Openness and authenticity are the preferred alternatives.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
Assertion is necessary. Suppression of anger creates more problems than it solves. Fear and shame are not good motivations for communication.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Do you have a favorite part of the book or a favorite chapter?
The opening two chapters which identify the people pleasing pattern.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
Very few books address people pleasing fully.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: How does the book intertwine with God's call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
The book is consistent with my theology - specifically the understanding of pride's influence on unhealthy patterns and humility's influence on truly healthy behavior.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Do you have a favorite Scripture verse? What is it and why is it important to you?
John 3:30 It sufficiently summarizes my relationship with Jesus.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Are there any authors that either influenced you personally or influenced your style of writing? Who are they and how did they influence you?
Philip Yancey - Honest and Grace
Charles Colson - Applied Theology
Brian McLaren - Open Mindedness
A.W. Tozer - True Devotion to God
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: When you are not writing, what do you like to do?
Bass fishing and anything involving bar-b-que grill.
