Concerned that evangelicals seem uncertain about salvation, Sproul offers this clarifying work. He dissects the doctrine for today's Christians and explains why "justification is by faith, through grace, alone." His response to the recent affirmation, "Evangelicals and Roman Catholics together," draws the limits of interchurch dialogue while recognizing mutual goals. A thought-provoking book. 224 pages, softcover from Baker.

This volume covers Chapter 3, verse 20 to the end of Chapter 4. In it the preacher moves step by step through the massive reasoning of the Apostle Paul on atonement and justification, yet the detail of the exposition does not stand in the way of a clear view of the whole, and the reader is constantly shown how every section fits into the theme of God's complete plan of salvation. The Epistle to the Romans has a deep significance for the present day, and the sermon form with its direct address to the listener makes each exposition both clear and gripping.

The Reformation swept across Europe with a God-glorifying gospel of grace. Now the doctrine of grace cherished and proclaimed by the Reformers is under renewed assault from an unexpected place---the evangelical church itself.

With the help of several theologians, Gary L. W. Johnson and Guy P. Waters trace the background and development of two seemingly disparate movements that have surfaced within the contemporary church---the New Perspective(s) on Paul and the Federal Vision---and how they corrupt the truth of salvation by faith alone. By regaining a focus on the doctrine of grace, pastors, seminarians, and future leaders can regain the cohesion, coherence, and direction to truly build the church to withstand the attacks of false and empty doctrines.

While there is much by way of activity around the world in sharing the message of God's love, at times there is a lack of clarity on exactly how it is that God saves and accepts sinners. Right at the heart of God's redemptive love is the cross of Christ, and the work which Jesus did in purchasing our salvation. In this book, Dr Eveson helpfully opens up the Bible's teaching on justification, and then compares it with modern thinking, notably with Roman Catholicism and modern ecumenical projects, and with the views of Rev Tom Wright. The book includes detailed general and scripture index.

Martin Luther's The Bondage of the Will is fundamental to an understanding of the primary doctrines of the Reformation. In these pages, Luther gives extensive treatment to what he saw as the heart of the gospel. Free will was not merely an academic question for Luther. Rather, he believed that the whole gospel of the grace of God was bound up with it and stood or fell according to how one understands the human will in relation to salvation. Luther affirms our total inability to save ourselves and the sovereignty of divine grace in salvation. He upholds the doctrine of justification by faith and defends predestination as determined by the foreknowledge of God. Luther considered this refutation of Erasmus to be his finest theological work and it has remained a classic in the history of Christian thought.

Christian unity is important. And unity in the gospel is essential. Yet that unity was tested by the release of two documents. Evangelicals and Catholics Together and The Gift of Salvation, which appeared to surrender the doctrine of sola fide (faith alone). Then a new level of unity was achieved with the release of a statement called The Gospel of Jesus Christ: An Evangelical Celebration.

This sequel to Sproul's popular Faith Alone includes the complete text of The Gospel of Jesus Christ along with thorough, point-by-point discussion and exposition. The significance of this latter affirmation is summed up by Christianity Today which noted that "a number of people have been stunned by the broad acceptance of this statement." It has been signed by "Methodist and Presbyterian, Pentecostal and cessationist, Baptist, Lutheran, Anglican and free church" leaders.

As Sproul explains, unity in the gospel touches the soul of the church itself and all of its members. "To be faithful to the Great Commission," writes Sproul, "we must get the gospel right."

Martin Luther is often accused of wrongly exaggerating the doctrine of justification when he calls it" the doctrine upon which the church stands or falls." However, since it is integral to the Gospel that Christ commands the church to preach, a church is only a true church if she properly teaches the doctrine of justification, according to Dr. Sproul. In this series, Dr. R. C. Sproul examines justification, the way in which we are declared righteous by God. Dr. Sproul explains the biblical teaching regarding justification, demonstrating that Christ's righteousness is reckoned to us and joins with Luther in calling the church to proclaim boldly that we are justified by grace alone through faith alone.

Reformed theologian David J. Engelsma contends for Calvinism against one of the gravest threats to Reformed Christianity since the Synod of Dordt in the early seventeenth century. The threat is the denial not only of justification by faith alone, but also of all the doctrines of grace. Like the Arminian heresy, the contemporary attack on the Reformed faith comes from within. It is found in those Reformed and Presbyterian churches that still claim adherence to the Reformation creeds. Those who launch the attack occupy pulpits and seminary chairs in these reputedly conservative churches.

What makes the attack especially dangerous is that it consists of a development of a doctrine of the covenant that is popular in Reformed and Presbyterian churches. The newest form of the age-old attack on the gospel of salvation by sovereign grace is covenant doctrine. It called itself the "federal vision," that is, "covenant vision."

The Covenant of God and the Children of Believers defends the Reformed faith against the current attack by exposing the doctrine of the covenant from which the attack arises. This is something that few, if any, of the opponents of the federal vision have done. At the same time, the book sets forth the doctrine of the covenant that safeguards and promotes the gospel of sovereign grace, demonstrating that this covenant doctrine is biblical, confessional, and traditionally Reformed.

Since the controversy centers around the inclusion of the children of believers in the covenant, this book emphasizes the rightful place of children in the covenant of grace and the proper rearing of them. These are truths of the greatest practical importance for godly parents, as also for Reformed churches and Christian schools. Consideration of the inclusion of children in the covenant enables the author to distinguish the covenant views of the Protestant Reformed Churches, Baptists, the Netherlands Reformed Congregations, and the Canadian Reformed Churches ("liberated"). Leading representatives of these churches and traditions join in the discussion.

An entire chapter is devoted to the comfort of godly parents at the death of infant children.

All those who are concerned about the contemporary controversy over justification, as well as those who simply have an interest in the covenant of God with the children of believers, will benefit from this book.

The Marrow of True Justification or Justification Without Works contains the substance of two sermons preached on Romans 4:5.

"Justification by faith alone, that central doctrinal feature of the Reformation, has proven to be a controversial issue down through the years. This is not surprising, since it undermines the perennial human desire to have human merit as the basis for salvation. But this doctrine is eminently biblical. Moreover, it glorifies God and puts human beings in their place in a God-centred universe.

"Controversy erupted over this doctrine towards the end of the Puritan era, and it has to be admitted that Richard Baxter, such a good guide to Puritan views on ethical issues, was behind the theological errors to which Benjamin Keach ably responds in this vital work. But why reprint this work from a bygone day and old controversy? For the simple fact that theological error on this issue is not relegated to the past. As significant sectors of Evangelicalism careen towards theological disaster in our day, this issue of how a person is made right with God has again become a matter of debate and acrimonious dispute. And here Keach can help us.

"So read this work! Defend with your last breath the biblical doctrine herein recommended! And glorify the God who justifies the wicked!" - Dr. Michael Haykin

Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was an important Particular Baptist preacher, author, and ardent defender of Baptist principles, even against Richard Baxter. Often in prison and frequently in danger for preaching the Gospel, he was the first to introduce the singing of hymns in the worship of English congregations.

N. T. Wright, a world-renowned New Testament scholar and bishop in the Church of England, has spent years seeking "new" interpretations of the apostle Paul's writings. Among his conclusions are that "the discussions of justification in much of the history of the church certainly since Augustine got off on the wrong foot, at least in terms of understanding Paul and they have stayed there ever since."

Accordint to Piper, Wright's confidence that the church has gotten it wrong for 1,500 years, given his enormous influence, set off warning bells for Christian leaders such as himself, a pastor and New Testament scholar. According to Piper, if Wright's views find a home in the church, not only could the doctrine of justification be distorted for generations to come but the New Testament writers' original intent could be silenced. This book is a call from John Piper to all Christians, citing his warnings against "fresh" interpretations of the Bible and his plea to hold fast to what he considers the biblical view of justification.

Dr. Lloyd-Jones saw Romans 5 as a central chapter in the entire letter. Here is Paul's exposition of the blessings of justification by faith; but here too, the cosmic roots of our salvation are traced back to Christ. As the Last Adam he has undone all that was twisted, and reversed for his people all that was lost, by the first Adam's sin and fall. Where sin abounded, grace has super-abounded! The triumphant note that is sounded by the apostle Paul in Romans 5 - that grace reigns through Christ - was one of the leading characteristics of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones' entire ministry. In his exposition of Romans Chapter 5, he explains how the biblical teaching puts a song of praise on the lips of God's people and assures them of the riches of God's grace. Simultaneously moving and mind stretching, Romans: Assurance merits a place among the great classics of biblical exposition.

Time and again in the history of the church, the truth that sinners are "not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ" (Gal. 2:16) has been hidden from sight by those striving to find a place for mans's own righteousness alongside the righteousness of Christ's in justification. Fearing that free justification through the imputed righteousness of Christ opened the floodgate to lawlessness, such teachers have so qualified the biblical doctrine as to obscure the only way in which sinners may obtain "peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:1). Robert Traill (1642-1716), son of a Scottish Covenanting minister, fugitive, exile and prisoner on the Bass Rock during the "Killing Times", wrote his masterly defence of the doctrine of justification by faith alone in 1692 to dispel such obscurity. With a brevity and clarity seldom equalled, "Justification Vindicated" refutes false charges against and movingly affirms the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone as the only door by which sinners may enter the presence of a holy God.

Every generation of Christian believers faces the challenge of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ with integrity and in conformity to the teaching of the Scriptures. But what do the Scriptures teach with regard to the central message of the gospel? Were the Reformers correct to insist that the good news of God's gracious and free acceptance of guilty sinners, on the basis of the obedience and atoning sacrifice of Christ, lies at the heart of the gospel? Or are we to accept the 'new perspectives' on Paul's teaching, which hav e been advocated in recent years by those who have made a fresh study of the relevant historical sources? Since the new perspectives challenge some of the basic features of the traditional Protestant understanding of justification, they require careful study and thoughtful evaluation. Nothing less than the shape of the evangelical church's proclamation of the gospel today is at stake.

This book has been written out of the conviction that Protestant churches need to reacquaint themselves with their rich doctrinal heritage, particularly their understanding of the gospel "the good news of free acceptance with God on the basis of Christ's" redeeming work. Before abandoning the "older perspective"on Paul in favor of the new, evangelical Christians must un derstand exactly what it is they are being asked to abandon. The newer perspective on Paul demands careful study and assessment, for at stake is nothing less than the gospel itself. This study features a summary of the older perspective of the Reformation, a general introduction to what is known as the "new perspective" on Paul, and a critical assessment of new perspective claims from both a biblical and a theological standpoint.

"Properly understood, the gracious gospel of Galatians liberates us from legalism," Ryken writes. "But since we are legalists by nature, the book challenges many of our preconceptions about what it means to have a right relationship with God." Ryken employs primarily the ESV.

About The Reformed Expository Commentary Series:

The Reformed Expository Commentary focuses on the English rendering of the biblical text, and thus does not address concerns of the original language nor academic technicalities. Rather, proceeding section-by-section it focuses on the narrative flow of the biblical book, while drawing out significant points or theological emphases in the text, and then applies them to the daily life of the Christian.

br/>The various points addressed range between historical events taking place within a books narrative, or upon significant doctrinal statements that are made. The application or "guidance" section as the series calls it rounds out each of the particular emphases from the text making it a complete expository volume. Each commentary approaches the text from a Reformed theological perspective, and can be used profitably for either study or devotion.

Major Perspectives:

  • Scripture: Inerrant & Revealed
  • Theology: Traditional/Conservative Reformed
  • Wider Tradition: Protestant/Evangelical
  • Audience: Pastors/Laity
  • Uses: Scripture Study, General Reading, Devotional

What is the gospel? What does scripture mean by salvation? What gospel has been consistently taught by the Reformers and those following in their steps? Such fundamental questions are adressed in this powerfull new book.

In a day when the essential message of the gospel is being assaulted by either Legalism or Antinomianism -Evangelical protestantism, which claims the heritage of the Reformation, is in danger of repudiating its history by embracing a gospel that fundamentally denies the message of the Reformers.

Debates on Catholicism and lordship salvation underscore the rampant confusion within evangelicalism over the precise meanings of salvation, justification and saving faith. This book clarifies the issues by clearly setting forth the biblical Reformation teachings of the gospel and savation. Softcover, 202 pages.

There was considerable conflict between the Jews and Gentiles at the church in Rome over theology. Jewish Christians were proud of their favored status before God, and the Gentile Christians of their freedom from the law. In his ministry of reconciliation, Paul develops two thems. The first is the justification of guilty sinners by God's grace alone in Christ. The second is that the people of God are no longer defined by descent, circumcision or culture, but according to faith in Jesus. So "there is no difference" now between Jews and Gentiles (Romans 3:22). The call to unity is just as relevant to us today as we continue to face tensions in the body of Christ. May we hear and respond to God's call to us in Romans.

20 lessons under the guidance of one of the world's leading and most loved Bible teachers and preachers, John Stott, include inductive study, application, commentary, prayer helps, and leader guidelines. The corresponding commentary by Stott in The Bible Speaks Today series is WW12460.

This book contains the moving testimonies of fifty priests who found their way, by the grace of God, out of the labyrinth of Roman Catholic theology and practice into the light of the gospel of Christ. But this is not a narrowly polemical work, nor is its relevance limited to the ongoing controversy between Rome and the churches of the Reformation. The love and concern felt by the former priests for those they left behind, and their fervent desire that they too should experience the joy and peace of salvation in Christ are seen throughout. The wider relevance of the experiences described will also be felt in many contexts remote from Roman Catholicism where human pride and presumption have erected rival sources of authority between people and the Word of God, so obscuring the way of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone.

Why is the cross the crux of Christianity? What are the meaning and significance of the atonement? The Bible uses a host of terms to illuminate the answers to these questions: covenant, sacrifice, the Day of Atonement, Passover, redemption, reconciliation, propitiation, justification. In plain English Leon Morris explains each of these words, thus opening up for students, pastors and teachers the fuller biblical dimension of God's great salvation.

  • A word for the Nation

    "The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;
    The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
    The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
    The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes."

    Psalm 19:7-8 (NKJV)
