Interview, Excerpt

When her father disappears in war-torn Mississippi, Hannah Dandridge finds herself responsible not only for her younger siblings but for the ranch her father recently acquired on the Texas plains. Though a marriage of convenience could ease her predicament, she determines to trust God for direction.

Wounded soldier William Barnett returns to his home only to discover that his family's ranch has been seized. Though angry and bitter at this turn of events, he's surprised to discover that it is a beautiful young woman with amazing fortitude who is struggling to keep the place running.

Hannah, desperate for help, and William, desperate to regain his family's land, form an uneasy truce. But nearby Comanche tribes, the arrival of Confederate soldiers, and a persistent suitor all threaten the growing attraction that builds between them. Will they be able to set aside their own dreams and embrace the promise of a future together?

Chasing the Sun Reading Group Guide: Tracie Peterson

1.  In Chasing the Sun, Hannah Dandridge finds her life altered by the plans her widowed father has for her.  She goes along with the plans in order to be an obedient daughter who honors her father, but it isn’t easy.  How do you feel adult children should handle the demands or desires of parents on their life? What does the Bible say about this issue?

2. William Barnett’s character also finds his life altered by his father’s desires.  This takes him into a war he doesn’t really want to fight.  Can God use the obedience of a child to honor his or her father, even when it conflicts with what the child believes to be God’s will for their life?  How can situations like that be bettered handled?

3. Forgiveness is a reoccurring theme in Tracie Peterson books and Chasing the Sun is no exception.  One of the areas where forgiveness is focused on deals with the Native American issues of the days.  These conflicts, from both sides, were often brutal and resulted in on-going negativity toward those involved.  How does this history play a role in today’s church and how can forgiveness be implemented to make changes in today’s society?

4. In the story, Will often confronts Hannah about her actions.  He often sees her stepping out to act foolish when she believes her deeds are God guided.  Have there been situations in your life where God led you in a direction that seemed foolish to others, but you knew you were doing the right thing?  If so, maybe discuss it.

5. In the story, Will and Tyler break the laws of the land for the greater purpose of trying to help those in need.  How do you think God looks upon situations like this and is it ever right to disobey the “law of the land”?
