Interview, Excerpt, Product Closeup

Having fled their homeland of France because of the persecution by Louis XIV, the Clavell family seeks refuge in Switzerland. However, the king is not about to let the recently widowed Madeleine, his childhood sweetheart, escape that easily. He sends musketeers to kidnap her and her oldest son, Philippe, holding them captive in his opulent palace. King Louis is suspicious that Philippe could be his son, and he's enraged by the growing affection of one of his courtiers for Madeleine. Will Madeleine escape the king with her life or lose everything that she's fought so hard to keep?

A Prisoner of Versailles Discussion Questions: by Golden Keyes Parsons

1. It is a matter of history that King Louis XIV literally sent spies into Switzerland to ferret out the Huguenots who had fled there to escape religious persecution. What would you have done if you had sought refuge in a free country from the tyranny of religious persecution and you knew that soldiers could arrest you at any moment and take you back? Would you give up, hide, flee to another country?

Madeleine and her family had financial reserves. But what if you had no means to flee any farther? What would you do? Where would you turn?

2. What were your thoughts concerning François’ death? Would you have given him the laudanum? Did that offend you?

3. Madeleine was forced to return to a place that put her in a confused and conflicted position. She at one time loved Versailles and King Louis, but as an adult she could see the seducing, subtle evil behind the life style. Have you ever been in a position to return to a life style that, though tempting, you knew would hold you prisoner and ultimately be your demise? Perhaps it was a person or maybe even an addiction. What did you do? Did you give in for a period of time? Did you flee? Did you return only to find what you remembered as glamorous and fun was empty and hollow?

4. Look up I Corinthians 10:13, preferably in the Amplified or The Message. What does God promise to do for us when we are tempted? How did He make a way of escape for Madeleine?

5. Commander Paul Boveé turns out to be a hero of sorts. What were your feelings about that? Has there ever been anyone in your life that you started out disliking, and they ended up being a friend? Tell the group about it.

6. What was the most tense scene for you? When Madeleine and Pierre try to escape from the musketeers? When Pierre reports to King Louis? When Pierre is thrown into prison? When Madeleine and Pierre and Philippe escape? When Commander Boveé is fighting the soldiers? Or some other scene? Give your reasons.

7. Have you ever been offended by God, or mad or angry at Him? Before you answer too quickly, every major character in Scripture was offended by God. Think about it – Moses, Abraham, David, even Jesus (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?”) – all had their times of wondering what God was doing and why hadn’t He come to their rescue? And all of them, except Jesus, tried to work out their situations by their own schemes. Moses ran away into the desert to escape God’s call on his life; Abraham tried to “help” God out by having a child by his wife’s handmaiden instead of by Sarah, his wife; David had been anointed king, but had to run for his life for years, finally crying out to the Lord, “Wilt Thou forget me forever?”

Madeleine was offended that God had allowed her family to go through trial after trial and the oppressions seemed to be unending. She could not understand why God was not rescuing her from what seemed to be certain destruction of her life. What would have been your feelings? Could you relate to her? What would have been so bad about being in the “honored” position of the king’s maîtresse en titre?

8. What was your favorite scene?

9. Discuss the conclusion. Was it a satisfying conclusion to you? Why? Are you wondering what happens to the family in the next book? Stay tuned. Book #3 in the Darkness To Light Series to be released in the Fall of 2010.
