 A Word About Reference Bibles

In a reference Bible, the text contains cross-references to related words, phrases, topics, themes or people. The references can be located in a side column or columns, a center column, at the bottom of the page, or at the verse or paragraph breaks within the text. While most Bibles contain cross-references to at least some degree, on this page we have listed only those Bibles classified as true "Reference" Bibles.

Reference Bibles come in many different formats, so they will not all appear on this page. Many of the Thinline, Compact and Large-Print Bibles are indeed reference Bibles. If you are looking for a reference Bible in one of those formats, be sure to check those sections.

Typically "Reference Bibles" differ from "Study Bibles" in a few key ways. Study Bibles will normally have same page "study notes" - as a sort of built-in commentary - to help you understand and interpret the Scripture. While they may also incorporate references, they usually offer more in the way of additional helps than the typical Reference Bible. If you are looking for more study helps, you may want to consider a Study Bible.
