Since Lincoln, no other president has written his own words and addressed his audience with equal and enduring effectiveness. Lincoln is distinguished from every other president, with the exception of Jefferson, in that we can be certain that he wrote every word that his name is attached. Lincoln explores Lincoln's life through his use of language as a vehicle for complex ideas and feelings and as an instrument of persuasion and empowerment. Like the other great canonical writers of American literature-a status he is gradually attaining-Lincoln had a literary career that is inseparable from his life story.

George Washington Carver, a former orphaned slave invented peanut butter and was known as "The Peanut Man." He became famous because of his peanut inventions but he was much more than a peanut magician. From 1896 until his death in 1943 he worked to improve the lives of poor farmers in Alabama and other farms in the south. A professor at the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, he gave speeches to groups of people both white and black, as well as to farmers groups, and came to gain the respect of both white and black people. Booker T. Washington said that Carver was, "a great teacher, a great lecturer, a great inspirerer [sic] of young men and old men."

The foundation for all modern economic thought and political economy, The Wealth of Nations is the magnum opus of Scottish economist Adam Smith, who introduces the world to the very idea of economics and capitalism in the modern sense of the words. Smith details his argument in five books:
  • Book I. Of the Causes of Improvement in the Productive Power of Labour
  • Book II. Of the Nature, Accumulation, and Employment of Stock Introduction
  • Book III. Of the Different Progress of Opulence in Different Nations
  • Book IV. Of Systems of Political Economy
  • Book V. Of the Revenue of the Sovereign or Commonwealth

  • Taken together, these books form a giant leap forward in the field of economics. A product of the "Age of Enlightenment," The Wealth of Nations is a must for all who wish to gain a better understanding of the principles upon which all modern capitalistic economies have been founded and the process of wealth creation that is engendered by those principles.

In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and--by way of the Snake and mighty Columbia--down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West and when they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead. Lewis is supported by a variety of colorful characters: Jefferson and his vision of the West; Clark, the artist and map-maker; and Lewis--the enigma, who led brilliantly but considered the mission a failure. After suffering several periods of depression--and despite his status as nations hero--Lewis died mysteriously, apparently by his own hand. Abridged. Read by Cotter Smith. 4.5 hours.
