One of the least-known of all Thoreau's works, and one of the most heavily criticised, it still remains the work of the one of the most original authors and philosophers in America's past. Chronicling his discovery along with shores of Cape Cod, he spends his nights in lighthouses, fishing huts and farms, observing the variety of life and death that surrounds the sea. 319 pages, softcover.

From 1837 to 1862 Thoreau wrote over two million words in his Journal, a compendium of private thoughts and experiences that ultimately filled forty-seven manuscript volumes. Its purpose and contents evolved over these years, for the Journal began as a conventional record of ideas and reflections, grew into a writer's workbook, and eventually became the principal imaginitive work of Thoreau's literary career. Source of both his published writings and several unfinished works, the Journal was also an ideal complement to Thoreau's artistic vocation; in its privacy he could write, constantly and copiously, free from the restrictions imposed by conventional editors and readers.

Two classic examinations of individuality in relation to nature, society, and government, Walden conveys at once a naturalist's wonder at the commonplace and a Transendentalist's yearning for spiritual truth and self-reliance. "Civil Disobediance" is perhaps the most famous essay in American literature--and the inspiration for social activists around the world, from Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Walden describes Thoreau's domestic ecomony, the wildlife, the few visitors to his remote wooden hut, and his reflections on the quality of human life in an age of growing materialism and of a prevailing work ethic. It has become a poignant critique of the values of Thoreau's society which retains its relevance and extraordinary power today.

Henry David Thoreau's vision of personal freedom is indelibly etched on the American consciousness. "We need the tonic of wilderness," Thoreau wrote in Walden, and by turning his back on town amenities to build a house on Walden Pond in 1845, he helped shape our notions of the individual subsistence, and a moral relation to nature. Included here with the complete text of Walden are selections from Thoreau's first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers; "A Plea for Captain John Brown," his eloquent defense of the American abolitionist's rebellion at Harper's Ferry, and such masterpieces as his famous essay "Civil Disobedience". 790 pages, hardcover with dust jacket.

Thoreau's Wild Apples first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in November of 1862. The book begins with a short history of the apple tree, tracing its path from Ancient Greece to America. Thoreau saw the apple as a perfect mirror of man, and eloquently lamented where they both were heading. Though his words were written over 125 years ago, they live on today as a reminder of the need to preserve what is wild. Thoreau wrote,"Our wild apple is wild only like myself, perchance, who belong not to the aboriginal race here, but have strayed into the woods from the cultivated stock." 48 page softcover by Applewood Books.

Thoreau's Walking was written shortly before his death in May, 1862. In this charming little book, Thoreau treats his subjects as if it were a walk itself. As he wanders, so do his thoughts. Thoreau believed he was born to walk, and he walked both for exercise of mind and body and as a way of exploring his inner and outer world. Walking was posthumously published in the Atlantic Monthly in June of 1862. Later it was published as part of a larger collection of essays, Excursions, in October of 1863.
