Our Interview with Dr. Harry Kraus

Please give us a bit of background information.

I am a surgeon, serving as a Christian missionary in East Africa.

I started writing my first novel while in my surgery residency and all of my novels are laced with a thread of medical authencity.

Why are you living in Africa?

I have been serving with my family in Kenya where I work as a consultant surgeon and my wife works as a teacher. Medicine is a great spearhead for the gospel!

How did you come up with the concept for All I’ll Ever Need?

This book is the third in a series of books written about Claire McCall, a young female doctor who makes a diagnosis of a genetic illness, Huntington’s Disease in her father. I was intrigued by this illness as it is inherited, but doesn’t manifest itself until the person carrying the gene is in mid-life, when all of their plans for life, love and occupation have likely been made. I wanted to explore the idea of how a Christian who felt called into medicine might react if they learned they were at risk for an illness that would destroy their career just as it was beginning. Would Claire be able to trust God even if he had determined that she would suffer from Huntington’s Disease from the moment of her conception?

Is any part of All I’ll Ever Need factual?

Not factual, but the medical scenarios are absolutely realistic.

How closely is this All I’ll Ever Need based on your life and your practice?

All I’ll Ever Need is not based on my life. I do know families affected by Huntington’s Disease and have a huge respect for their ability to trust in the face of an uncertain future.

How long did All I’ll Ever Need take you to complete?

About a year. But understand, my writing has to find its place in the periphery of my life, tucked here and there around my life as a missionary surgeon.

What is the symbolism for the title All I’ll Ever Need?

All I’ll Ever Need is another line from the Anne Murray song, and follows along the pattern we used for the first two books in the series, Could I have This Dance? and For the Rest Of My Life.

Who is all I’ll ever need? Jesus!

Do you have a favorite character? Why?

That’s easy. Claire. She’s tough under fire. She helps others even when she is in personal crisis.

How much research did All I’ll Ever Need take?

Most of the research about Huntington’s was done for the first two books. For this book, I needed a little help to gain an inside look at our county jail and how the process of intake/ court proceedings occur. An attorney friend, Aaron Cook, was invaluable in this process.

Is this the beginning of a series?

It is the end of a series.

What are some of the challenges you face as an author?

To FIT IT ALL in: writing, surgeon, family, mission. I’ve considered cloning, but as of now, it doesn’t seem to be a viable option for getting more done.

Are there any other new projects on the horizon?

  • I have a new novel coming out with Zondervan next Spring: Perfect.

It’s all about a young woman who’s outside life appears perfect while on the inside, trouble is brewing.

Who was the person who influenced you the most with your writing?

Angela Hunt, a prolific fiction writer and friend, helped set up a supportive novelist’s group, Chi Libris. The group has been invaluable for making connections that have opened up new directions for my fiction.

What advice would you give to a person trying to become a fiction writer?

Study the craft. Don’t take shortcuts. Writing is hard work. Read the fiction teachers. My favorites are Sol Stein and Donald Maass.

What message would you like your readers to take away from All I’ll Ever Need?

God’s grace to us is a constant. It’s present in the deliverance from pain, but also comes to us cloaked in the disguise of suffering.

What is your goal or mission as a writer?

To write entertaining fiction that challenges readers to deeper streams of Christian faith, by presentation of flawed people in a hurting world encountering the hope of grace.
