Our Interview with Amy Nicole Wallace

What led you to become a CBA author?

As a Christian author my heart is to see the Church strengthened and encouraged, as well as challenged to look beyond the surface and care about the inner turmoil so many of us struggle to process.  My writing reflects that desire and the CBA is a natural placement for the Defenders of Hope series.

How did you come up with the concept for Ransomed Dreams?

My wild ride of writing life started with a dream about a mom in trouble and an FBI agent battling his own dark issues. I started reading a ton of FBI books and dreamed about writing this story, but not until my husband set up an interview with a Christian federal agent did I believe this story would ever become a real book. With the awesome help of this Secret Service agent, my plot outline became a far more detailed story and Ransomed Dreams took shape.

Why do you write about FBI agents and children?

In college, I wanted to be an FBI profiler. But that's not the path God intended for me.  Instead I get to interview, read about, and then write about people I admire—without having to qualify for Quantico.  I write about children because I adore my kiddos and am passionate about reminding tired moms (what mom isn't tired?) that our kids are a gift to treasure.

Is any part of Ransomed Dreams factual?

No, the story is entirely fiction.  However, it is based on a very real fear of mine—that of losing my husband and children.

How closely is this Ransomed Dreams based on your life?

There are plenty of little tidbits throughout Ransomed Dreams that highlight bits and pieces of me, but this story is not my life at all. A fact for which I’m grateful.

How long did Ransomed Dreams take you to complete?

I wrote the original rough draft in six weeks because God has interesting ways of answering prayer. After I’d done tons of research and had the story outlined, I prayed for the time to write it.   Being a homeschool mom, I had no idea how I was going to accomplish that.   But when my eighteen-month-old daughter started to fall off our front porch and I got between her and the pavement, I had my answer.  I ripped a tendon in my foot and had to be in a full non-walking cast for six weeks. Thus, the time to write was mine, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

What is the symbolism for the title Ransomed Dreams?

The title comes from my view of God being the ultimate heart healer and dream redeemer. Isaiah 43 says that God ransomed us and called us by name. I love that! So the title is symbolic of God having ransomed, reclaimed by payment, not only His children, but also our dreams.

Do you have a favorite character? Why?

That’s a tough question!  I love Gracie’s unwillingness to give up when hope feels impossible and Steven’s passion for keeping kids safe and his love for his son.

How much research did Ransomed Dreams take?

A great deal of research went into writing Ransomed Dreams. I read FBI biographies, scoured the FBI website and internet, and also asked my amazing federal agent advisor tons of questions about guns, case procedures, and the inner workings of federal agents.

How many titles will be in the Defenders of Hope series?

There are three books in the Defenders of Hope series.

What is your Favorite verse from the Bible?

My all-time favorite verses are 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”

Do you prefer to write suspense fiction?

I enjoy telling a heart-thumping tale that entertains as well as draws people deeper. Suspense is a great vehicle to do that.

What are some of the challenges you face as an author?

As a homeschooling mom and author, the biggest challenge I face is balancing my responsibilities with the 24 hour allotment of time I’m given each day.  I love being a mom and an author, but they keep me at the feet of Jesus more than anything. I also face the challenge of hanging onto God’s view of me and not letting my worth be determined by reviews and people’s opinions.

Who was the person who influenced you the most with your writing?

My husband is the most influential person in regards to my writing. Without his insistence that I write and his belief in me, Ransomed Dreams wouldn’t exist.   And while David is my greatest influencer and biggest fan, my children are my greatest inspiration to write.  They love life and God unapologetically.  They work hard, play hard, and get back up when they mess up. I want to grow up to be more like them.  And I want them to see through my life that the tough choice of obedience yields the amazing gift of seeing God and living the dreams He has for us.

What advice would you give to a person trying to become a fiction writer?

Pray hard, trust God’s perfect timing, and remember that who you are as a beloved child of the King far exceeds anything you may accomplish in this world.

What message would you like your readers to take away from this book?

It’s my prayer that Ransomed Dreams readers meet Jesus through the pages of an engaging story and see the healing power of forgiveness in a way they can transfer to their own walk with the Lord.
