A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on a long spiritual adventure. In seizing the inspiration that came to him through Rembrandt's depiction of the powerful gospel story, Nouwen proves the several movements of the parable: the younger son's return, the father's restoration of sonship, the elder son's vengefulness, and the father's compassion. In his reflection on Rembrandt in light of his own life journey, the author evokes the powerful drama of the parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers.

Deeply comforting and profoundly realistic, Turn My Mourning into Dancing is gleaned from the unpublished writings of beloved author, lecturer, and pastor Henri Nouwen. It focuses not on how you can survive hard times but on how you can live fully in the midst of them and beyond. Drawn from the deep well of Nouwen's experience as a pastor, a teacher, and a thinker, it offers solace without platitudes. Ever practical, never pat or simplistic, it gently points the way toward a way of life that is grounded in God's constancy and rooted in eternal hope---the kind of life that can dance even in the middle of the darkest night.

The Wounded Healer was written in response to the often asked question "What does it mean to be a minister in contemporary society?" Nouwen has divided his study into four chapters: the suffering world, the suffering generation, the suffering man, and the suffering minister. In this book Nouwen shows how it is important to interrelate to achieve a more effective and relevant ministry in our broken culture. In order to help the rest of the suffering, the minister first must recognize his own. He must go beyond his professional role and leave himself open as a fellow human being with the same wounds and suffering.

Recounting his recent experiences at a L'Arche community for the mentally handicapped, these reflections from Henri Nouwen come from his own openness to personal struggle and growth. Here he enables us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus by identifying how the temptations of Christ in Lk. 4 relate to the temptations of our personal ministry. He then explains how we can respond to these temptations with the spirit of Christ. His message lovingly conveys how his relationships with these broken people have so deeply touched him. Heart-warming and provocative.

The last book published by Henri Nouwen before his untimely death in 1996, Can You Drink the Cup? explores the deep spiritual impact of the question Jesus asked his friends James and John. Reflecting upon the metaphor of the cup, Nouwen uses the images of holding, lifting, and drinking to articulate the basics of the spiritual life. The cup, a symbol used to celebrate a wide range of human endeavors, becomes for him an image to illustrate spiritual potential. Written with the profound insight and clarity characteristic of his numerous best-selling books, Nouwen's deeply perceptive exploration of Jesus' challenging question has the power to pierce your heart, expand your spiritual horizons, and radically change your life.
