Jump for Joy
Mary visits Elizabeth. Luke 39-45

Parent Prep:
Supplies: A deflated balloon
You’ll use a balloon to tell the story today. If your child begs to do the balloon portion again, take the opportunity to reinforce the main point by repeating the words along with the illustration.

Mary packed her suitcase and hurried to visit her relative, Elizabeth. Up and down the hills of Judea Mary walked until she came to Elizabeth’s door.
“Hello, Elizabeth. May God be gracious to you,” Mary said.
Elizabeth was pregnant, and when she heard Mary’s greeting, the baby inside her belly jumped. Elizabeth was filled with God’s Spirit. Elizabeth said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!...As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1:42, 44).
The baby boy inside Elizabeth's tummy was so glad he jumped for joy. The mother of Jesus was standing in his house. Immanuel was on his way!
Wherever God's Spirit is, there is joy (Galatians 5:22). If you have God's Spirit inside you, you can have joy too.

Sometimes that gladness is so big (blow a deep breath into the balloon), so great (blow into the balloon again), so powerful (blow one last big breath into the balloon), that you have to let it out (release the balloon and watch it dart, dodge, and swirl around the room).
When you have joy, you might leap or skip for joy. You might sing or laugh for joy. You might do cartwheels or climb a tree for joy.
How you show joy may be different than how someone else shows joy.

How do you like to show joy?
How does God show His joy through you?

Advent Adventure: Christmas Tree Ornament
Supplies: Table covering (e.g., newspaper), pen, tree pattern (see page 132), cone-shaped coffee filter, water, scissors, colored markers, string or yarn
•Trace the tree pattern from page 132 onto a piece of paper.
• Fold the filter in half by bringing the two points together. Crease the fold.
• Line up the tree pattern with the fold you just made. Keep the tip of the tree at the tip of the cone filter.
• Cut out the pattern and unfold your tree.
• Cut a small hole at the top of the tree and thread a piece of string through the hole.
• Place the tree on the newspaper and use markers to place several large colored dots on the tree. Leave plenty of white space around each dot.
• Dip the tip of the pen into water and add a drop to the center of each dot.

What happens? The color bleeds from the center of the dot outward. When we have joy, it spreads to those around us. What are some ways you can spread joy?

Advent Adventure: Christmas Light
Supplies: a squat wide-mouthed jar (like a salsa jar), light-colored wrapping paper, glue stick, tea light
• Cut a long strip of the wrapping paper that can be wrapped around the outside of the jar.
• Glue the paper to the outside of the jar.
• Place a tea light inside and light it.

When God's Spirit is inside us, like this candle is inside the jar, God's joy and light shine to everyone around.

I Wonder
Can I be sad about something and still have joy?

Prayer to Share
Dear God, thank You for Your joy that bubbles up inside me. When good things or bad things happen, I can have joy. You are always with me, always taking care of me. Amen.

It's coming! It's coming!
Christmas is coming!
Only __ more days until Christmas!
