CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
God has blessed me with over 32 years of ministering to women as a Bible teacher, national keynote/conference speaker, author of numerous books, newspaper columnist, and with radio and TV ministry opportunities. In addition, He’s given me the joy of founding and serving as president of Hill Country Ministries, a nonprofit ministry with the mission to spread God’s Word and love. Prior to founding HCM, I served as a teaching leader for Bible Study Fellowship and later founded a large community women’s Bible study. Recently, God’s birthed a new branch of my ministry, Pray With Passion Across the Nation, a three-hour conference I’m taking to every state in America, Lord willing.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: How did you become interested in writing?
I was asked by my state convention to write a Bible study that would help women learn to share their faith. God birthed my writing through Discovering His Passion, an eight-week, video-driven Bible study; which has also been translated into Spanish and Vietnamese.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What compelled you to write a book on this subject?
I’ve always loved Colossians. It’s chock-full of doctrine and practical application. As a matter of fact, I memorized Colossians three years ago. I’d wanted to write a study on Colossians for years, but the time was never right. I praise God for His perfect timing.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What is the main theme or point that you want readers to understand from reading your book? Are there any other themes present in the book?
God calls us to live extraordinary lives and provides the Holy Spirit by which we’re able to do so. Living an extraordinary life brings God glory and gives believers perspective and hope. Many believers live desperate, strung- out, basket-case lives. Although it’s true we can’t avoid all basket-case moments, we can learn how to avoid some and how to make extraordinary choices in the midst of unavoidable ones.
A second theme is control. Are we retaining control of our lives, which leads to more basket-case moments? Or, do we daily, moment-by-moment yield control of our lives to God and discover His empowerment in and through our basket-case moments?
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Are there some specific lessons you hope readers will learn and apply to their lives after reading your book?
There are a million! As I mentioned earlier, Colossians is filled with verse-by-verse points of application. A lesson? Yes. Believers have a choice to live an extraordinary life. Choose God’s ways to avoid basket-case moments and be empowered through unavoidable ones.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: What makes your book different than any other books similar to yours that are in circulation today?
Women like to laugh, but they also like deep study. This study offers both. The humorous title attracts them. The basket-case theme throughout the book keeps the study lighthearted while women delve into deep verse-by-verse study.
In addition, a daily “Basket Case? or Extraordinary Life?” application section makes this book unique. In it, a women analyzes her life in light of the day’s Scriptures. She’s able to contemplate if her daily choices contribute to her basket-case moments. She’s able to discover alternate choices that lead to an extraordinary life.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: How does the book intertwine with God’s call on your life and how you are currently serving Him?
My passion is to help women grow in their knowledge of God and live an extraordinary life that glorifies Him. As I continue to set my mind on the things above, Colossians 3:2–3, God’s led me, as I mentioned above, to take Pray With Passion Across the Nation to every state in America. My goal is to take it to 26 states by 2010. In the last month, since mentioning it on my blog, I already have bookings in four states and inquiries from numerous other states. This branch of my ministry is a ministry in and of itself, because I’m not charging my speaking fee or asking host churches to cover my travel expenses. God impressed me He’d freely given me the principles to teach and I’m to freely give them to women across America. I’m excited about this new venture and also the opportunity to offer If God Is in Control, Why Am I a Basket Case? and If God Is in Control, Why Do I Have a Headache? at my book table.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Do you have a favorite Scripture verse? What is it and why is it important to you?
Philippians 3:7-10 is God’s calling on my life: to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings. Knowing God and living by His power is the most important thing we can do. From that flows every assignment, every ounce of strength we will need for service, and every bit of perseverance we’ll need through trials.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Are there any authors that either influenced you personally or influenced your style of writing? Who are they and how did they influence you?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship, introduced me to the concept of living a peculiar, or extraordinary life for Christ.
Watchman Nee, The Release of the Spirit, taught me the difference between living a Spirit-filled and a carnal life.
I’ve always loved Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest.
These men have influenced me by opening the Word and helping me see my life in relation to God’s calling. I’m to be more than mediocre. I’m to live a passionate, Spirit-filled life. My heart’s desire is to now turn and help my sisters discover that same passion.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
When I’m not writing I love to spend time with family and friends. We can be anywhere, doing anything…whether cooking out or vacationing. I love the mountains and ocean. We frequent both. My husband and I recently went to Alaska fly-fishing and that was a great experience. We’ve now taken up golf. The jury is out on whether it will be something I “like” to do. If I can get my swing down, I’m sure I will (laughing). Of course, I like to read. Water and snow skiing are long-time favorites.
CHRISTIANBOOK.com: Thank you for taking the time to answer a few of our questions. As we close, is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes. The time is short. Every one of us should be using every available moment and bit of energy to serve our wonderful risen Lord. If you do not know Christ as Savior, you can go to my Web site, www.hillcountryministries.org and click the menu at left titled, “How to Know Jesus.” You can also sign up to receive my free e-devotionals.
