When Abraham Lincoln was born, slavery was an everyday part of life. Even so, Abe didn't like it. As he grew older, he worked to aid his countrymen regardless of their color. As a surveyor, Abe helped people inspect their land. As a lawyer, he made sure people were treated fairly in court. But he wanted to do even more. After years of hard work, he became president of the United States and ended slavery forever.

Lincoln at Cooper Union explores Lincoln's most influential and widely reported pre-presidential address -- an extraordinary appeal by the western politician to the eastern elite that propelled him toward the Republican nomination for president. Delivered in New York in February 1860, the Cooper Union speech dispelled doubts about Lincoln's suitability for the presidency, and reassured conservatives of his moderation while reaffirming his opposition to slavery to Republican progressives.
Award-winning Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer places Lincoln and his speech in the context of the times -- an era of racism, politicized journalism, and public oratory as entertainment -- and shows how the candidate framed the speech as an opportunity to continue his famous "debates" with his archrival Democrat Stephen A. Douglas on the question of slavery.
he Cooper Union speech, which was carefully researched by Lincoln and refers often to the Founders and authors of the Constitution, is an antislavery lecture, capped by a ringing warning to would-be secessionists in the South. It reaches its climax with the assurance that "right makes might." Long held, inaccurately, to be an appeal to the conservatives, Holzer presents Lincoln's speech as a masterly combination of scholarship, a brief for equality and democracy, and a rallying cry to the country and the Republican party.
Holzer describes the enormous risk Lincoln took by appearing in New York, where he exposed himself to the country's most critical audience and took on Republican senator William Henry Seward of New York, the front-runner, in his own backyard. Then he recounts the brilliant and innovative public relations campaign, as Lincoln took the speech "on the road" in his successful quest for the presidency.

Originally published in 1943, Daugherty sees Lincoln through the eyes of an American artist and poet. A Caldecott and Newbery honored author and illustrator, Daughtery's Abraham Lincoln is:

"It is a picture of a tumbling, surging young nation with the pioneer states knocking at the door, the era of the coonskin cap and the French brocade. Across its broad canvas pass the lynx-eyed backwoodsmen, the crinolined belles of the plantation South, the slick politicians of wartime Washington in the 1860s, the desperate fighters in blue and gray. It is the sound of battle, and the bands playing 'Dixie,' and the march of tired feet and the trumpets calling."

Because he held no formal church membership, he has even been labeled "anti-Christian." There is, however, little doubt that Abraham Lincoln was a most devoted Christian. His entire life reflects a deep personal faith in God. This book will attempt to explore the spiritual side of Abraham Lincoln, relying on his own words and the observations of his family, friends, and historians. For ages 9 to 13.

On a cold and frosty night a young man fights to stay awake as he struggles to keep an eye out for the enemy. The American civil war is in full swing and one family among many thousands are desperately waiting for their son to come home.

That night he falls asleep at his post and his punishment is going to be the firing squad. There is nothing the young man's family can do to change the outcome-- except maybe one thing. His sister remembers reading the life of Abraham Lincoln. She is sure that if she could just meet him and tell him, face to face, what was about to happen to her brother he would do all he could to help save her brother's life. Once the President knows how much her parents love her brother and how they are all longing for him to come home surely her plea will be answered?

D L Moody tells the touching story of one young soldier's narrow escape from death in a way that focuses your mind on Christ and his compassion for sinners. If Abraham Lincoln could show mercy on a young soldier and his family, surely our Lord Jesus Christ can show compassion to those who turn to him. Recommended for ages 5 to 9.

Derek and Michael are travelling with their grandmother to Washington D.C. and on the way stop at Harper's Ferry Civil War Museum to visit. Curiously enough, after trying on Union soldier uniforms, the boys pass through a door and find themselves in 1862 in Antietam just days after the battle. They think that it is all a game, a reenactment, until they meet Abraham Lincoln and witness the horrors of war. When their pocket watch chimes, they have one hour to return to the museum or they will be trapped forever in 1862 . . . will they make it in time?

Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address moved an entire nation, and his ability to write great speeches, make witty remarks, and tell tall stories has made him America's most quoted president. "You may fool all the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you can't fool all of the people all the time" is perhaps our nation's most famous aphorism, and now it joins Lincoln's best one-liners, anecdotes, and advice in a delightful topic-by-topic collection of Lincolnisms. Also included are Lincoln's funniest satire on his least favorite general; his well-known repartee in defense of Ulysses S. Grant's drinking; his own comments on the important events of his life; and accounts by contemporaries such as Walt Whitman, Leo Tolstory, and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Don E. Fehrenbacher, editor. Abraham Lincoln, America's heroic Civil War president, was also the greatest writer ever to occupy the White House. His addresses at Gettysburg and at his inaugurals, his presidential messages and public letters are an essential record of the Civil War and have forever shaped the nation's memories of it. This volume, the second of two, collects writings from 1859 to 1865 and contains speeches, messages, proclamations, letters, memoranda, and fragments. They record the words and deeds-the order to resupply Fort Sumter, the emancipation of the slaves held in the Confederacy, and proposals to offer the South generous terms of reconstruction-by which he hoped to defend and preserve the Union. A companion volume contains writings from 1832-1858. "A momentous and thrilling addition to any private library." -Alfred Kazin, The New York Times Book Review.

Don E. Fehrenbacher, editor. Abraham Lincoln measured the promise-and cost-of American freedom in lucid and extraordinarily moving prose, famous for its native wit, simple dignity of expression, and peculiarly American flavor. This volume, with Speeches and Writings 1859-1865, comprises the most comprehensive selection ever published. Over 240 speeches, letters, and drafts take Lincoln from rural lawyer to U.S. senatorial candidate, and chart his emergence as an eloquent antislavery advocate and defender of the Constitution. Included are the complete L incoln-Douglas debates, perhaps the most famous confrontation in American political history. "The best selection of Lincoln's writings available today, perhaps the best ever. If one wants to be familiar with the moral underpinnings of America and, at the same time, read the English language at its finest, turn to this handsome set." -Christian Science Monitor.
