Deuteronomy, the last and widely considered the most influential of the five books of the Pentateuch, preserves the three addresses Moses delivered to the people of Israel just prior to his death and their entry into the promised land. Its name, which means "second law," represented a reiteration, explication, and, to a degree, expansion, of the sole covenant between God and Israel. It was a reinterpretation of the law designed to meet the needs of a new generation facing a new future.

In this volume of the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series, Old Testament scholar Mark Biddle skillfully leads his readers to consider how these words which have often confounded the casual reader can help us understand and meet the needs of our own generation as well.

All volumes in this series include these features to support interpretation: sidebars in four categories, a wealth of fine art visuals, and a CD-ROM containing all the text and images of the volume in a format.

The Old Testament provides peculiarly powerful ways of thinking and seeing. Brueggemann considers the artistry of 1 & 2 Kings as it mediates between history and faith. He has spent many years engaged with the artistry and imagination of the Old Testament, pondering the ways of power in church and society and he makes clear that those issues of power in the ancient texts still pertain to contemporary times. The commentary proceeds text-by-text, special focus is placed upon Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, and Josiah as models of faith. Brueggemann provides a guide for the reader to maneuver between flat history and absolute faith.

This commentary uses a three-fold format for each section of the biblical text: (1) a commentary section containing critical analysis and interpretation; (2) a section that makes connections between the text and the modern reader by suggesting contemporary applications; and (3) special interest material related to the text. Also included is a CD-ROM containing all the text and images of the volume in a searchable format. The CD-ROM that contains: the full text of the commentary, visuals from the commentary, hyperlinked outline and visual thumbnails, powerful search capabilities, Adobe Acrobat Reader with Search, and the ability to add study notes to the file.

Drawing from recent scholarly studies in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, these commentaries incorporate a reading of the books with a view toward connectivity and theological reflection. In addition to the imaginative artwork used for illustration, readers will find a broad appeal to contemporary literature and authors as touchstones for applied reflection. Because of their use of universal concepts and images, these books from the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Bible may be some of the most relevant biblical writings for the contemporary setting. For this reason readers are invited to recontextualize, through the perspectives of contemporary literature, the wise council of Israel's ancient sages.

All volumes in the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series include these features to support interpretation: sidebars in four categories, a wealth of fine art visuals, and a CD-ROM containing all the text and images of the volume in a searchable format.

In his commentary on the Letter to the Hebrews, New Testament scholar Edgar McKnight explores the two aspects of Hebrews as covenant--the appeal to the perfection and finality of Jesus Christ and the exhortation to faithfulness based on that appeal. He also highlights the interpretative strategies of the author--strategies that are often strange to modern readers. By bringing the ancient text into the world of present readers and to take readers back to the world of Hebrews, we are able to frame the author's treatment of the problems of our spiritual ancestors from the perspective of our modern world and problems presented in our pilgrimage.

In his accompanying commentary on the Letter of James, New Testament scholar Christopher Church presents the letter as something of a biblical and historical fossil, a surviving representative of a once-flourishing Jewish Christianity. The Letter of James exposes a form of early Christianity distinct from the Pauline line that later predominated.

This writing by John is the strangest and most puzzling literature in the New Testament. It is a work that teases and tantalizes the imagination; a work that often obscures as much as it reveals. Yet if Revelation is the most enigmatic of the New Testament writings, it is also one of the most powerful. It challenges its readers to be faithful servants of God, demanding unswerving loyalty to the God "who is, who was, and who is to come." John's visions contain strong words of warning and judgment. At the same time, Revelation presents a message of comfort, offering images of hope and assurance in the midst of uncertainty and despair.

This commentary, part of the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series, uses a three-fold format for each section of the biblical text: (1) a commentary section containing critical analysis and interpretation; (2) a section that makes connections between the text and the modern reader by suggesting contemporary applications; and (3) special interest material related to the text. Also included is a CD-ROM containing all the text and images of the volume in a searchable format.
