Excerpt, Product Closeup

Among the many issues that have divided Eastern and Western Christians throughout the centuries, few have had as long and interesting a history as the question of the filioque. Christians everywhere confess their faith in the ancient words of the Nicene Creed. In the Orthodox East, the faithful profess their belief in "the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father," while in the West they say, "...who proceeds from the Father and the Son (the Latin term "filioque").

In his new work, The Filioque, A. Edward Siecienski not only presents first complete English language history of the filioque in over a century, but he traces the history of the doctrine and the controversy that has surrounded it. From the Greek & Latin fathers, to the Councils of Lyons and Ferrara-Florence, and to the 20th and 21st century theologians that remain in dialogue over this thorny controversy, Siecienski magnificantly narrates the strange and fascinating history behind one of the greatest ecumenical rifts in Christendom.

While the Christian East is gaining recognition among many churches in the West, few have yet to understand how deeply ecological the vision of Orthodox Christianity truly is. The Eastern Church holds creation to be an epiphany of God while seeing human beings as His unifying masterwork, functioning as a connective link that unites the creation and the Creator. This implication charges us then to boldly manifest our love for God, for others, and for our environment, by practicing "the right use of material things." To communicate this vision, Elizabeth Theokritoff draws upon ancient sources--the Church Fathers, the liturgy, and saints' lives--to present fresh wisdom and insight from the Orthodox tradition that is both accessible and relevant to theologians and lay people alike. Living in God's Creation is essential reading that demonstrates the role God's people are to play in the care of the His creation, while exemplifying the long tradition Christianity holds toward environmental concerns.

In Fellow Workers with God Norman Russell draws upon ancient and modern sources, in addition to his weightier work Deification in the Greek Patristic Tradition, to sharply focus upon the meaning and process of "theosis." Here, Russell presents this teaching with breathtaking clarity concluding that theosis is not merely salvation from sin but entry into the fullness of the divine life, which is humanity's ultimate destiny. An excellent historical discussion on an important doctrine of the Eastern tradition.

Deification in the Greek Patristic Tradition provides a comprehensive survey of both pagan philosophical and Greek patristic approaches to theosis (or divinization) from late antiquity through the seventh century. Theosis was considered the fulfillment of the destiny for which humanity was created - not merely salvation from sin but entry into the fullness of the divine life. Norman Russell traces the history of deification from its birth as a second-century metaphor with biblical roots to its maturity as a doctrine central to the spiritual life of the Byzantine Church. Russell presents new insight into the discourse between early Christianity and the Graeco-Roman culture, while offering a full discussion of the background and context of the doctrine, at the same time highlighting its distinctively Christian character. In addition, Russell draws attention to the richness and diversity of the patristic approaches by drawing upon the early works of Irenaeus and citing the fathers through the 7th century writings of Maximus the Confessor.

Communion and otherness: how can these be reconciled?' In this wide-ranging study, the distinguished Orthodox theologian, Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon, seeks to answer that question. In his celebrated book, Being as Communion, he emphasised the importance of communion for life and for unity. In this important companion volume he now explores the complementary fact that communion is the basis for true otherness and identity.

With a con stant awareness of the deepest existential questions of today, Metropolitan John probes the Christian tradition and highlights the existential concerns that already underlay the writings of the Greek fathers and the definitions of the early ecumenical councils. In a vigorous and challenging way, he defends the freedom to be other as an intrinsic characteristic of personhood, fulfilled only in communion

Presented now with a foreword by Huston Smith, The Way of a Pilgrim and its sequel, The Pilgrim Continues His Way, portray the traditions and interior life of Eastern Orthodox spirituality. Written by an anonymous Russian Christian, the original manuscript came into the hands of a monk on Mount Athos in the nineteenth century and was first published in 1884. These chronicles follow the author as he travels through mid-nineteenth-century Russia and Siberia, visiting monasteries and the shrines of the saints in order to "pray without ceasing". His journey leads him to a staret, a Russian spiritual master who teaches him the spiritual discipline known as the Jesus Prayer--the uninterrupted mantra-like invocation of the name of Jesus. This extraordinary account brings to the West the soul of Eastern Christianity.

Excerpt

Sergius Bulgakov is widely considered to be the twentieth century's foremost Orthodox theologian, and his book The Comforter is the most comprehensive and profound book about the Holy Spirit ever written by a Russian theologian--perhaps by anyone anywhere. Bulgakov explores all aspects of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in encyclopedic fashion, both as they are viewed in the Orthodox tradition and throughout church history. The book has sections on the development of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in early Christianity and on the development of the doctrine of procession in the patristic and later Byzantine periods. It also touches on the place of the Holy Spirit in the Trinity and explores Old and New Testament notions of the Spirit of God. A concluding chapter deals with the mystical revelation of the Holy Spirit.

An important virtue of The Comforter is Bulgakov's treatment of the filioque question. In fact, his discussion of this question may be the most important modern contribution to filioque studies from the Orthodox perspective. Examining the writings of the chief theoreticians on both sides of the dispute, Bulgakov finds that each side is wrong in its own way. He concludes that the filioque question is not an insuperable obstacle to the reunification of the churches. Finally available in English through the work of Boris Jakim, today's foremost translator of Russian theology and philosophy into English, The Comforter is a major publishing event.
