St. Cyprian, the 3rd-century bishop of Carthage, developed a theory of church unity almost universally accepted up to the European Reformation. In order to be a member of the Body of Christ you needed to be in communion with a priest who was also in communion with a church bishop, who in turn was in communion with all the other bishops of the world. But, how could you discern who was a legitimate bishop, and what issues legitimated the breaking off this communion? Additionally, could self-authenticating ministries supersede this order, and did the Church need a universal bishop who could guarantee the integrity of the network of bishops? St. Cyprian wrestled with these questions in his letters and treatises, here selected and translated in these companion volumes. These companion volumes are of ultimate value to the current state of Christendom as they contain questions that continue to arise in various forms in the contemporary Church.

The Latin Fathers are considered those Church Fathers before the time of Augustine. The writings chosen to make up this volume are included in order to give readers an understanding of the theology that was present during this pre-Augustinian time. These writings occurred in and around the third century, meaning they wrote only two-hundred years after the life of Christ. The collection in the volume is to serve as a way of preserving Church tradition for the English-speaking world.

The Library of Christian Classics has long been acclaimed for its quality translations, introductions, explanatory notes, and indexes. The series ensures that modern English translations of some of the most significant Christian theological works written before the end of the sixteenth century are available for scholars and students, allowing contemporary readers to mine the theological riches of the Christian church though the centuries.

These are the only three existing ante-Nicene treatises on the Lord's Prayer. Candidates for baptism in the ancient Church were trained in prayer, a practice that gave rise to a tradition of commentary on the Lord's Prayer. These classic texts became the starting points for many other commentaries. Of the three, however, only the discourse of Cyprian is an address to catechumens. Tertullian's treatise contains additional material on the conduct of worship and on prayer in the assembly, and Origen's commentary is a vast work on the whole subject of prayer, as much suited to advanced learners in the school of Christ as to those preparing for baptism. All these texts remain spiritually vital, but since they are addressed to a different world, the translator has provided brief notes on points of difficulty and accessible yet scholarly introductions to make these rich works available to a fresh audience.
