 Our Interview with Sandie Bricker

What is your favorite Bible verse? Why?

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

This was the scripture verse that God whispered in my ear when I was going through my cancer treatments. I held that scripture in a vice grip, repeating the promise that I had a future over and over … until I actually did!
Would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent most of my adult life in Los Angeles. I’ve wanted to write for as long as I can remember and have held down day jobs for years (entertainment publicist, travel agent, customer service, editor, you name it!), all while studying my craft and writing evenings and weekends.
How did you come up with the concept for the Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California ? Do you live in Carmel? (otherwise known as heaven on earth!) What is your connection with Carmel?

I’m a California native, and I lived there several times. There’s just something about the Pacific Ocean that really calls out to me – it always has! – so I’ve spent a lot of time exploring, from the middle of the state to the Mexican border. When Summerside contracted the book, it had been written around another location. However, the publisher had just taken a golf vacation in Carmel, and he asked if I would consider revising it, set in this fantastic place he’d discovered.

What were the odds that, of all the places along the Pacific that I’d visited, Carmel wasn’t one of them? What a blessing though! Once a person steps foot in the place, they’re just never the same. I was so inspired by the landscape of the Carmel/Monterey area that I’m dreaming of retiring there one day!

What draws you to write fun fiction and romantic fiction?

God. (smile)  I’ve always known that my purpose here was going to revolve around writing, but the Lord took His time revealing the details to me. Once I finally broke into the inspirational market though, and people started responding in such a positive way to my humor, it kind of all unfolded from there. I love to tell stories that are fun and light-hearted, with an often-surprising thread of truth and faith woven through. My Christian faith is such a huge part of who I am that including that faith in my novels is a no-brainer for me. It makes a lifetime of writing aspirations come full circle.
How much research did Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California take?
Weeks and weeks … thank the Lord!  (smile)  It involved online research, talking to people who knew the area well, and a good bit of time exploring on my own. It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it, right?

What are the most interesting facts that you learned while researching and writing Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California?

I’m a longtime (and avid) fan of classic film. So it was really fun to learn that Carmel-by-the-Sea was developed as a creative community by filmmakers, actors and artists. Those roots have translated over the decades because there’s something really inspiring about the area. It’s almost like you can just breathe in the creative energy just by being there.

What clubs or organizations are you involved with helping with your writing?

I’m a member of RWA and Faith Hope & Love, as well as ACFW both nationally and regionally. I spent about seven years co-hosting America Online’s weekly workshop for Christian writers called Heart & Soul. Since I started out as a film school grad with her eye on writing scripts for television and movies, I’m also active in a screenwriting group.
What do you do to keep your writing fresh and improve on it each time you write a book?

I read a lot, both new contemporary novels and the classics. I also see a lot of movies; because I’m a very visual kind of writer, films inspire my storytelling. I also have a pretty full life outside of my writing, which I believe is imperative to keeping my fictionary worlds realistic and fresh.

What were your favorite books as a child?

I loved Dr.Seuss … then and now! I adored the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books as a kid as well … and I still do love a good mystery.
Are there any other new projects on the horizon?

I’ve been contracted by Abingdon Press to write three more books in the series to follow Always the Baker, Never the Bride, which came out last fall. The first of them (Always the Wedding Planner, Never the Bride) will be out in September of this year.
In addition, I’m leading several teams of authors for a few upcoming devotionals for Summerside Press (the publishers of Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California). The devotionals are fun and light-hearted, each with a specific theme. Be Still…and Let Your Nail Polish Dry centered around spending time with God wherever you can, and Delight Yourself in the Lord…Even on Bad Hair Days (in bookstores March 1st) leads readers toward a relationship with Jesus as their first line of defense in facing the challenges of their lives.
What message would you like your readers to take from Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California?

That God has a plan for each of their lives. Instead of running ahead of Him, there can be a real joy in the journey of letting it all unfold.
