Why are there four Gospels?

Wouldn't it have been better to have one complete biography of Jesus?

Interesting questions! Perhaps the answer could be summed up by saying that each of the four Gospel writers wrote to bring out a different theme. Matthew, a Jew, shows us Jesus as King, the One who fulfilled the Jewish prophecies in the Old Testament. Giving our lives to Jesus involves more than just words. We need to submit to his authority, something modern men and women find hard to do Matthew has much to teach us, and this study helps us bring this into sharp and often uncomfortable focus.

The Gospel of Matthew is all about the Kingthe King of the Jews, the King who came to die to save His subjects, the King who is coming again to establish His millennial kingdom, the King of Kings. That King is Jesus Christ. Matthew focuses on both the first and second comings of Christ, with the assurance that in both cases, indeed the King is coming! Hinson and Borland focus on Matthew, the tax collector turned disciple, as he writes to Jewish believers and unbelievers alike, taking into account the character and nature of the ministry of John the Baptist as the last of the prophets.

Readers of the New Testament often encounter quotes or allusions to the Old Testament that may be unfamiliar or obscure. In the Commentary for the New Testament use of the Old Testament, G. K. Beale and D. A. Carson have brought together a distinguished team of scholars to isolate, catalog, and comment on both the obvious Old Testament quotations and the more subtle allusions found in the New Testament. The result is a comprehensive commentary on the Old Testament references that appear from Matthew through Revelation. It is a vital resource for the reference library of every student of the New Testament, and accessible for all who wish to engage in detailed Bible study.

Filled with doctrine, prophecy, encouragement amid persecution, and instruction for faithful living within a multicultural society, Paul's epistles to the Thessalonians have much to say to 21st-century believers with the persecution of believers on the rise, sexual immorality running rampant, and the abundance of End Times prophecies. Interpreting 1 & 2 Thessalonians from a premillennial standpoint, Dr. Mal Couch's commentary clearly expounds Paul's rich letters, laying emphasis on Christ's Return. Study questions and outlines add practicality, and the theological glossary enhances clarity.

In Paul's letters to the Thessalonians, even though Paul is sending corrections and instructions like in other letters, he also loves them, is anxiously concerned for their welfare, begs them to stand firm, teaches them, and prays for them constantly like the pastor he is. They also contain some of the most important New Testament passages about eschatology, the culmination of all things.

Ten lessons to study under the guidance of beloved pastor and teacher John Stott contain inductive study questions, application, commentary, prayer helps and leader guidelines. More information about the text can be found in Stott's commentary on Thessalonians (WW1237).

There is a great debate today over the meaning of Matthew 24 and Revelation 20, two passages central to any discussion of eschatology. Does Matthew 24 prophesy a coming Great Tribulation or a premillennial return of Christ? Does Revelation 20 describe a millennial age on earth, or in heaven? Will the nations be converted before the coming of Christ? J. Marcellus Kik provides great insight into these passages and the questions that surround them.
