Raskolnikov, a destitute former student, wanders through the slums of St. Petersburg and commits a senseless murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Dostoevsky's thriller of murder and redemption is redolent of St. Petersburg's atmosphere. A cornerstone of Russian literature, and one of the greatest detective stories ever told.

Returning to St. Petersburg froma Swiss sanatorium, the gentle and naive Prince Myshkin - known as 'the idiot' - pays a visit to his distant relative General Yepanchin and proceeds to charm the General, his wife and his three daughters. But his life is thrown into turmoil when he chances on a photograph of the beautiful Natasya Filippovna. Utterly infatuated with her, he soon finds himself caught up in a love triangle and drawn into a web of blackmail, betrayal and, finally, murder. In Prince Myshkin, Dostoyevsky set out to portray the purity of 'a truly beautiful soul' and to explore the perils that innocence and goodness face in a corrupt world.

David McDuff's new translation brilliantly captures the novel's idiosyncratic and dream-like language and the nervous, elliptic flow of the narrative. This edition also includes a new introduction by William Mills Todd III, which is a fascinating examination of the pressures on Dostoyevsky as he wrote the story of his Christ-like hero.

The Gambler is the tale of a young tutor in the employ of a Russian general, and was written under a strict deadline so Dostoyevsky could pay off his roulette debts. As the story unfolds it reveals a psychological narrative on the destructive power of addiction. Also included in this volume is White Nights, the story of a dreamer who recalls four evenings of pure happiness, Bobok where a frustrated writer visits a graveyard and overhears the conversations of the dead, The Meek One which features a harrowing monologue in which a speaker soon realizes that he's to blame for his wife's suicide, and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man where a young gentleman plans his suicide and is saved when he has a troubling dream. Seven stories in all.

Written in 1872, this translation of the powerfully impacting novel by the author of The Brothers Karamazov offers a poignant and almost prophetic study of a nation in turmoil and of Pyotr and Stavrogin, two anti-czarist reformers who threaten the very core of the Russian nation. Together they train groups of terrorists who are willing to lay down their lives to accomplish their goals. But when the group is threatened with exposure, will their recruits be willing to kill one of their own to cover their tracks? Savage and powerful yet lively and at times comic, Demons was inspired by true events and is a scathing indictment of those who use violence to serve their beliefs.

The four years Dostoyevsky spent in a Siberian prison camp were nasty, brutish and long, the most agonizing of his life. No other novel depicts the prison coffin with more immediacy than The House of the Dead. Its documentary detail - the convicts and their fascinating stories, the wooden plank bed that they sleep on, the cabbage soup swimming with cockroaches that they eat - is made all the more vivid by the controlled, oddly impersonal tone of the narrator. He, like the others, had stepped beyond himself to commit his crime. He found his strange family of convicts boastful, ugly, vain, cruel and ludicrously obsessed with outward appearances. But it is their vitality that overtakes The House of the Dead, turning the crisis of its narrator into a slow miracle: the return and reawakening of his personality.

"I am a sick man . . . I am a spiteful man," the irascible voice of a nameless narrator cries out. And so, from underground, emerge the passionate confessions of a suffering man; the brutal self-examination of a tormented soul; the bristling scorn and iconoclasm of alienated individual who has become one of the greatest antiheroes in all literature. Notes From Underground, published in 1864, marks a tuming point in Dostoevsky's writing: it announces the moral political, and social ideas he will treat on a monumental scale in Crime And Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov.
