( Only 2 in stock - order soon! Additional quantities may be backordered. ) Unit 1 of the Science Out of This World Series, "Just Looking Up", introduces students to astronomy. Each unit is thematic & interdisciplinary, integrating basic content from various scientific areas with its primary topics; in Unit 1, these topics include magnetism, optics, light, gravity, the solar system, stars, seasons, and why the night sky is different during different seasons. Helping students to learn basic scientific methods and principles, general study skills, and team-building skills through hands-on investigations, this award-winning program relates science to real-life, motivating students to want to learn. Designed for students in grades 5-8. This unit is designed to take approximately 5-6 weeks; a typical week of class includes 3 video taped lessons and 2 non-broadcast lessons. DVD lessons are designed for Tues, Wed. and Thursday, with Monday designated for more hands-on math activities, and Friday for science activities; quizzes and tests are also to be given on Friday. The DVD begins each lesson with an attention-getting introduction that may be a skit, NASA video, or just an interesting story; it's followed by a presentation of the main ideas covered in the lesson lasting about 15 minutes. Following the presentation, students are supposed to complete a short hands-on activity that relates directly to the presentation and helps the students understand the topic more fully. The labs do require a teacher to actively direct student work. Students are encouraged to work out problems within cooperative groups of 4 students called crews; each student has a job title and an assignment, and fills out his/her own data sheet. This portion of the class also lasts about 15 minutes. The class concludes with a final 10 minute segment, during which time the activity is related to the idea explored in the lesson. More notes are taken, and there is a practice quiz. Weekly quizzes contain 2 questions from each lesson covered that week, and tests contain 2 questions from each lesson in the unit. There is a test at the end of each unit. This Kit Includes: Unit 1: Just Looking Up Student Book Unit 1: Just Looking Up DVD

Instead of memorizing formulas and equations the first year, taking
geometry, and forgetting everything by the second year, Videotext
Algebra helps students to understand learning through mastery learning,
rather than the traditional spiral-approach. The DVD-based lessons of Videotext Algebra
covers Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 with computer-generated graphics,
animation, and Color-sequencing "textbook lesson". 176 lessons are
approximately 5-10 minutes long each, and approach concepts in a
logical, detailed order. Course notes allow students to review the
development of a concept as it follows the lesson, repeating exactly
what was shown on the DVD, while the student worktext provides a
review, additional examples, and concise exercises to complete. The
solution manuals include detailed, step-by-step solutions to every
problem; progress tests provide an opportunity for students to
demonstrate their understanding of each lesson and unit. Two versions
of the test allow for retesting or review to ensure mastery.
