So begins one of the earliest masterpieces of English literature, a collection of stories as much prized for the portraits of its storytellers as for the stories they tell - portraits that reveal much of the rich social fabric of the 14th century England. Now three of the most popular tales - along with the charming General Prologue - have been selected for this edition: The Knight's Tale, The Miller's Prologue and Tale and The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale. Paperback, 135 pages.

In The Canterbury Tales Chaucer created one of the great touchstones of English literature, a masterly collection of chivalric romances, moral allegories and low farce. A story-telling competition within a group of pilgrims from all walks of life is the occasion for a series of tales that range from the Knight's account of courtly love and the ebullient Wife of Bath's Arthurian legend to the ribald anecdotes of the Miller and the Cook. Rich and diverse, The Canterbury Tales offers us an unrivalled glimpse into the life and mind of medieval England.
Nevill Coghill's masterly and vivid modern English verse translation is rendered with consummate skill to retain all the vigour and poetry of Chaucer's fourteenth century Middle English.

Both The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Cressida are presented complete in this anthology, in fresh modern translations by Theodore Morrison that convey both the gravity and gaiety of the Middle English originals. The Portable Chaucer also contains selections from The Book of Duchess, The House of Fame, The Bird's Parliament, and The Legend of Good Women, together with short poems. Morrison's introduction is vital for its insights into Chaucer as man and artist, and as a product of the Middle Ages whose shrewdness, humor, and compassion have a wonderfully contemporary ring.

During the great seige of Troy, Troilus, The son of Priam, sees Criseyde and falls in love with her. Later, with the help of Pandarus - one of the first great character studies in our literature - Troilus wins her love, only to be betrayed. Cecil Day Lewis considered that Troilus' betrayal was so painful that no one "without reluctance reads it twice". Nevertheless, Chaucer's depiction of passionate sexual love, his grasp of tragedy and the unpredictability of Fate, and his wonderful sense of the ridiculous often contained in the sublime make it "one of the most beautiful long poems in the English language".

The First Fragment of The Canterbury Tales contains some of Chaucer's most popular and widely enjoyed work. Chaucer introduces his pilgrims in The General Prologue, a set of speaking portraits drawn with a loving clarity that makes no attempt to conceal imperfections. The pilgrims represent human society, and the tales of the Knight, Miller, Reeve and Cook reveal a variety of human preoccupations, particularly romantic and sexual love. Each tale is alive with Chaucer's skills as a poet, as a storyteller and as a creator of comedy. This edition is designed so that the First Fragment can be read as a unit. A very full glossary faces Chaucer's text, and a detailed set of explanatory notes follows it, so that students and readers approaching The Canterbury Tales for the first time can enjoy and appreciate the language of Europe's first great English poet.

The tragedy of Troilus and Criseyde is one of the greatest narrative poems in English literature. Set during the siege of Troy, it tells how the young knight Troilus, son of King Priam, falls in love with Criseyde, a beautiful widow. Brought together by Criseyde's uncle, Pandarus, the lovers are then forced apart by the events of war, which test their oaths of fidelity and trust to the limits. Described by editor Barry Windeatt as Chaucer's "most ambitious single achievement, his masterpiece," Troilus and Criseyde is the first work in English to depict human passion with such sympathy and understanding. A new, authoritative original-spelling edition with on-page glossing. Includes introduction, suggestions for further reading, chronology, and explanatory notes. Appendices include a table comparing Chaucer's poem with its source, Boccacio's Filistrato; glossary; and bibliography.

In "The Book of the Duchess", Chaucer's first such "love vision", he is entirely true to the convention, but progressively he enriches it with humorous and original events and dialogues. Virtually spanning Chaucer's working life, these four poems, like "The Canterbury Tales" and "Troilus and Criseyde", build up a marvelous self-portrait of the poet, often self-deprecatory, curious or comically obtused and always witty, lively and humane. Brian Stone introduces each of his excellent verse translations with a short essay, and includes notes and a list of further reading.
