Maybe the Sheriff's star that his pa wears has something to do with trouble hitting close to home. Actually, in Susan K. Marlow's latest Goldtown Adventure, "River of Peril," trouble comes when the family isn't home . . . rather, they're on a journey to the big city of Sacramento.
Traveling by stagecoach is a hot, gritty, and long ride. But the monotony is broken when a couple of bandits hold up the coach and steal the valuable assets that are being secretly taken to Sacramento (apparently the secret was leaked!). But wait-- Jem's dad pulled a fast one on the bandits by hiding the assets elsewhere. Hopefully the frightened travelers will be safe and the valuables placed in the bank before the bad guys figure it out what happened and try to track the Sheriff down again.
Unfortunately, it's Jem, his little sister, and cousin that will find themselves in peril by the time the bandits catch up to the family. The kids will learn to rely on God trust Him to make it out of a very dangerous situation...
Although Kregel provided this book in exchange for my honest review, I never get tired of the adventures that Susan Marlow churns up. Always fun, gripping you from the outset, full of history, and with a Christian worldview . . . it doesn't matter if they're for kids when the writing is great! Thanks for another fun read!

Marlow in her new book, "River Of Peril" Book Four in the Goldtown Adventures series published by Kregel Publications gives us another adventure with Jeremiah "Jem" Coulter .
From the back cover: Jem Coulter thinks his family is just on a sightseeing trip to the big city of Sacramento. Then armed bandits hold up the stagecoach for the secret stash they're carrying: gold for the Union Army fighting the distant Civil War! Suddenly war isn't so far away; it's right there on the road to Sacramento, with Jem's father, the sheriff of Goldtown, fighting against the rebel army's Knights of the Golden Circle.
When the family finally reaches the city, they think they're safe at last. Setting out to see the sights, Jem, his sister Ellie, and their cousin Nathan make a new friend. But is Henry the pal they think he is? With a father who is a die-hard Confederate, could Henry be in cahoots with the thieves?
In 1864 what would be an adventure is if the family left the small town they lived in and took a stagecoach ride to the big city of Sacramento, especially if the kids have never been there before. Jem and his sister are in for another adventure as they get involved with rebels, robbers and kidnappers. And what is this mystery regarding his sheriff father? Stagecoaches, steamboats, stowaways and lots of gold are just some of the ingredients that Ms. Marlow has supplied in this new adventure. She also provides lots of story with plenty of suspense. I think Susan K. Marlow is an extremely talented writer who really knows how to tell a story that will grab you and keep you flipping pages. "River Of Peril" is a very exciting book that will keep you engrossed in the characters. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

Danger in the form of bandits way lay them and the adventures begin. The bandits make off with a huge, heavy box of gold. But as soon as the bandits are out of sight, the coach takes off with lightning speed before the bandits realize they've been tricked!
When they arrive at their destination (where the gold is to be transported), the ship hasn't arrived and Pa has to make arrangements for securing the gold. Meanwhile Jem and his sister decide to do some exploring--with some dangerous results. While they are getting a tour of the boat from their new friend (the captain's son), they come face to face with the bandits who tried to rob their coach! The bandits manage to capture of of them. How will they make a rescue? How will Pa keep the gold safe and is their new friend's father one of the bad guys? How will they get themselves out of this mess?
At the end of each book, the author includes historical notes explaining a bit more of the time period. I love how accessible history becomes through these great stories! Marlow creates just enough suspense and feeling of danger without going too far--a very fine balance when writing for this age. The author really creates an authentic feeling for the time and place that helps kids feel like they know just what it was like living in that time period.
One thing that I really appreciate about Marlow is the exceptional resources she has (both free and for sale) to accompany her books. You can visit her website and find coloring pages and other activities to go along with her books. I hadn't read the complete series but still enjoyed this book. Marlow keeps things entertaining and appropriate for a younger audience. Both boys and girls will enjoy this series.

Bang! When a gunshot shatters the family's stagecoach trip, Jem Coulter knows he's not in Goldtown anymore! What began as a fun visit to the big city of Sacramento is fast turning into an adventure. Roasted rattlesnakes! Highwaymen holding up the stage? Pa acting strange - like he has secret Sheriff business waiting at the end of the trail, a shipment of hidden gold, a Confederate sympathizer group - the Knights of the Golden Circle - what else could go wrong? Jem began the trip with suspicious that things were not quite what they seemed. Now he almost wishes they'd never shook the dust of Goldtown from their feet!
Once in Sacramento, Jem, sister Ellie and cousin Nathan explore the exciting river wharf. While helping a young boy in trouble, the trio are invited to visit a paddlewheel steamer - The River Duchess. To Jem's distress, even that turns into more than he bargained for when he stumbles into a dangerous smuggling operation. Suddenly, events churn faster than river rapids. When Ellie vanishes, it's up to Jem to rescue his sister before it's too late!
Susan K. Marlowe has crafted another page-turning adventure sure to please any boy (or girl!) ages 8 to 12 with "River of Peril." Marlow (also author of the Circle C Adventures and Circle C Beginnings) has filled a void with this excellent new series for boys - The Goldtown Adventures. Jem is a real boy without being too goody goody, yet he gets across some important Christian principals. He's not afraid to risk his life - or his cherished gold nuggets - to save his sister, Ellie or even a stranger.
Join Jem in his Goldtown Adventures - you're in for an old west, rip-roaring great time!
