With idealism, fervor, and very little knowledge of the actual conditions of warfare, 16-year-old Sandy M’Kethe enlists in George Washington's army to fight for liberty. Fortunately for Sandy, a seasoned warrior and freeman, Salem Poor, befriends him. With his beloved violin, his trusty longbow, and the knowledgeable Christian Salem at his side, Sandy learns to cope with over-sensitive hearing in the midst of the horrific sounds of war, and grows into a wonderful musician and wise warrior. Sandy matures in his knowledge of the ways of man, and in his Christian life. His adventures include those on land with George Washington and at sea with Captain John Paul Jones. The title, Guns of Providence, refers to both Jones' gallant ship and the Providence which guides Sandy and Salem.

This is the third book in Bond's saga of the M'Kethe family, Faith and Freedom. Those of us who have read the first two books, Guns of Thunder and Guns of the Lion, will be happy to have another episode. However, those who are first meeting with this saga in Guns of Providence will not need the first two books to thoroughly enjoy Sandy M'Kethe's adventures. Salem Poor, one of God's own blessed poor in spirit, sums up the spiritual side of this fascinating, well-researched historical novel: "You'll see Christ in all his loveliness and seeing him thus, you’ll be so dazzled by his presence and providence in your life that you'll fall at his gracious feet and live out every hour of your life adoring him" (pg. 109). While Sandy is learning this, the reader also gets to experience the thunder and gore of the American Revolution on land and at sea. Author Douglas Bond is a high school English teacher. His expertise with the English language and great interest in Christian history form the warp of this story, while his excellent imagination forms the weft. – Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

In this Faith & Freedom Trilogy Book 3, sixteen-year-old Sandy M'Kethe, son of Ian McKethe who plays important roles in the two previous books, Guns of Thunder and Guns of the Lion, sequel series to the Crown & Covenant trilogy, decides to go off to fight with the Continental Army under George Washington against the British in the American Revolution. After participating in the Battle of Dorchester Heights outside of Boston, MA, he and his new friend Salem Poor, a free black, sign on to serve in the Continental Navy aboard the sloop Providence under the intrepid sea captain John Paul Jones. Over the next four or so years, ot only do they sail the seas capturing British ships, but they also spend some time in Paris, France, where Sandy meets both Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.

Upon returning to America, the two fellow soldier-sailors are assigned to the disastrous attempt under the hapless Commodore Dudley Saltonstall to take the British fortifications at Penobscot Bay in Maine, which results in total defeat and destruction to the Continental forces. What will happen to Sandy and Salem? Will they be captured or escape? Will they even survive? Here is historical fiction which presents an engaging and accurate account of America's revolutionary beginning without political correctness. Sandy faces some hard questions and wrestles with difficult decisions, as all believers do in times of crisis, but the emphasis of the book is upon his striving to follow God's will in everything that he does. The ending is both sad and surprising. We did the book as a family read aloud and everyone enjoyed it.

Finally the long awaited conclusion of the Faith and Freedom Trilogy! Sandy M'Kethe and his friend Salem Poor serve on the Navy vessel "Providence" under John Paul Jones during the American Revolution. They take part in many important sea battles and have quite a few adventures. This is definitely the best in the series. I like the way Douglas Bond combines Christian values and historic adventure in his novels! This is a great book for everyone!!
