These intensely personal letters to the church and Christians of Thessalonica are reputed to be two of the very earliest Christian documents to be written. In them we find Paul's first scriptural statements about the glories of Christ and see evidence of his great compassion and love for this young church. He commends them for their perseverance in eth face of opposition from outsiders, brings comfort to those who mourn and loss of loved ones and encourages them to 'abound' still more in faithful service to Christ and in love to one another.
The letters of 1&2 Thessalonians also contain several key passages relating to the second coming of Jesus Christ. The basic message remains clear however these are interpreted: central to Paul's teaching in these two letters is a stress on living for God now in light of the future reality of the day of the Lord. The reality of the second coming and what is beyond it should affect our thinking, feeling and doing now. Since God is moving us to his 'future kingdom' that is filled with 'glory', we should all act nowin a manner that is worthy of God, and seek to live now in a way that is pleasing to God and that brings glory to him.
Dr. Cara ably and skillfully demonstrates that all of these themes, along with many others, are of great relevance for us today in the twenty-first century.
