Product Description

Few biblical books are as neglected by the church as 1 & 2 Kings. There are several reasons for this situation. First, some preachers find it difficult to construct sermons from Old Testament texts. Also, misconceptions about Old Testament history exist, such as its supposedly boring and has a nontheological nature. This causes laypersons to question the books' value for devotional readings. Also commentaries on these books often explain chronological and compositional matters without exploring the books' theological and literary richness. These barriers are overcome with this commentary on 1 & 2 Kings by Paul R. House.

The New American Commentary is for those who have been seeking a commentary that honors the Scriptures, represents the finest in contemporary evangelical scholarship, and lends itself to the practical work of preaching and teaching. This series serves as a minister's friend and a student's guide.

This commentary is very very basic. The author deals mainly with the authenticity of the book and scripture- which is needed -but there is very little word study. There is a good deal of arguing with (both in agreement and disagreement) C.F. Keil's "I and II Kings". Mr. House has put the time in with a good deal of reading and studying for the commentary, as the footnotes attest, but it still not an 'in depth' study of these two books. Over all a good reference as he has accomplished a lot of reading for you.

My goal as a lay Bible teacher is to supplement my Bible study with the efforts of scholars who may help guide my understanding. I want to leave a library to benefit my children and grandchildren as they journey along the path of faith.

House, while not stressing the more critical areas relating to Kings, has written an excellent work from a theological standpoint. While he is not high in analysis, he is on application, which is one thing for which I read commentaries.
