Publisher's Description

In this addition to the critically acclaimed BECNT series, respected New Testament scholar Jeffrey Weima offers pastors, students, and teachers the most up-to-date and substantive commentary available on 1-2 Thessalonians. Weima, a Thessalonians expert, experienced teacher, and widely traveled speaker, presents well-informed evangelical scholarship at an accessible level to help readers understand the sociological, historical, and theological aspects of these letters. As with all BECNT volumes, this commentary features the author's detailed interaction with the Greek text, extensive research, thoughtful chapter-by-chapter exegesis, and a user-friendly design. It admirably achieves the dual aims of the series--academic sophistication with pastoral sensitivity and accessibility.

This is one of the better commentaries on these epistles. It is readable, understandable, and trustworthy. It certainly shows the results of 20 years of study and teaching on the subject at Calvin college. He has taken time to think through the major issues concerning them. His introduction epistles are through, but not over bearing or boring. It certainly gives the reader the idea of what life was like in this city.

The commentary itself goes section by section, giving an literary analysis of the passage, function, and structure; an overall analysis of the section; a verse by verse exegesis and exposition of the text, ending the section with additional notes (mostly technical and critical textual notes). Included are three excursuses throughout the book: One on I Thess. 1:9-10 being pre-Pauline? Another of the textual reading of 1 Thess. 1:7. And one on 2 Thess. 1:6-7 concerning the Restrainer.

While there are areas I disagree with theologically (on the restrainer and the rapture), I still found his comments helpful challenging and insightful. His writing is concise, to the point, yet gives you meat on the bone to chew over. It gives the reader a grasp of the augments Paul uses to convey the truth in a logical manner. It is the type of commentaries that will be useful to student and preacher alike. I found it one of the best, worthwhile, and one of the first I reach for in studying the Thessalonians epistle. I also think it is one of the better ones of the series. Give it room on you book shelf.
