Product Description

A series of devotional commentaries, which allow people to get to grips with each book of the Bible one bite at a time. Phil Moore will not cover the whole of each book, but rather focuses on key sections which together form a useful introduction. There will be 25 volumes in all: each contains about 60 readings, but this may vary from book to book. Although the tone is light, the text is full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship.

The Straight to the Heart is a series of devotional commentaries for those who appreciate the insights and sound research found in commentaries but find scholarly writing dry and lacking in personal application. The books in the series do not cover the whole text, but focus on key sections which communicate the main themes of each book. Although the tone is light, the text is full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship. Its clear, thought-provoking insights will feed both mind and soul.

Corinth was a large city in ancient Greece. Corinth was a major world trading center, it held 2 harbors. Their were people from all over the known world that traveled in and out of Corinth to trade. Corinth was known for its 12 temples. The most famous was the temple of Aphrodite the goddess of love. In this temple worshipers practiced prostitution. The Corinthian people were also influenced by Greek philosophy.

Paul wrote his letters to the Corinthian church in the Spring of 55 AD and in the Autumn of 55 AD. He wrote these letters from Ephesus. Paul had spent from late 50 AD until early 52 AD in Corinth establishing a Church.

Phil Moore wants his readers to understand that even though the Corinthian church had "faults and failings, it was still the kind of church God could use."

Even though our present day churches have "faults and failings" God can still use us.

In, Straight To The Heart 1 & 2 Corinthians, Phil Moore teaches us from the Corinthian letters what we need to accomplish in order to be a church God can use.

Phil Moore's commentary on 1 and 2 Corinthians is described as "bite-sized chapters." They are relevant, applicable, and understandable for any person. His commentary is not a detailed verse by verse teaching. They are rather a summary with an emphasis on application on a set group of Scriptures. Each group of Scriptures are of course divided in to these bite-sized chapters, rarely more than 4 pages for each chapter. I enjoyed the Greek definitions and applicable stories.

After reading Straight To The Heart of 1 & 2 Corinthians, 2 strong teachings emerged for me.

    1. I understood more of the history and culture of Corinth. I understood what Paul was up against in teaching them about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also understood more of why they were so apt to, and tempted to, return to the lifestyle they'd lived in for so long.

    2. In Phil Moore's applications, I was able to transfer Corinthian teachings in to my own everyday life.

One of my favorite quotes, "There was a reason why this church was so bad and yet so fruitful. The Lord also preserved these letters to remind us of how much grace he pours out on the Church through the Gospel. The early Church didn't conquer the ancient world because of its own inherent godliness or purity. It did so because grace turned sinful people in to 'the church of God', 'the field of God', 'the building of God' and 'the temple of God'. It did so because grace made them 'the body of Christ', 'the aroma of Christ' and 'a letter from Christ' which the world could not ignore."

Thank you to Kregel and Lion Hudson for my free book in order that I write an honest review.
